Gardening for a Greener, Safer Neighborhood 

Join PHS in our mission to work with the residents of Nicetown and Tioga neighborhoods to beautify the community and increase our focus on gardening and block beautification initiatives. Our goals to reduce trash and litter, as well as foster community pride and ownership also continue according to our plan. 

Garden the Blocks 

Residents are encouraged to create and maintain gardens, flower boxes, or container plants to uplift the neighborhood aesthetic. 

As part of this initiative, the "Love Where You Live" Front Yard/Porch Gardening Challenge rallies residents to beautify their blocks and increase access to fresh food while competing for prizes. Participants in the challenge receive all the materials needed, including big pots, EarthBoxes, transplants of flowers and herbs, potting soil, fertilizer, and tools like a hand trowel and watering can. Judging focuses on aesthetics, plant health, and social connections to family and community.
