Building and maintaining a healthy tree canopy is one of the most important things a community can do for the health and well-being of residents. Investment of time and money in tree planting and stewardship pays for itself in benefits for people, the environment, and the climate many times over.
A healthy tree canopy has been shown to:
The Nicetown and Tioga neighborhoods each have approximately 10% canopy coverage. This is well below the 30% target for a healthy canopy. As a result, the streets are hotter, households use more energy, air quality is poorer, and residents are more likely to experience certain negative physical and mental health outcomes that are tied to the low tree canopy.
Revitalize your neighborhood and promote a greener, healthier environment by applying for a tree through our program. PHS will provide assistance with tree permits, sidewalk pit preparations, and neighborhood tree delivery. Join forces with your neighbors to plant and nurture your new tree, fostering a sense of community and environmental stewardship.
Are you or your neighbors interested in receiving a street tree? Through the Nicetown and Tioga “Love Where You Live” greening plan funding, PHS will provide the services for your pit cut and plant your tree for free! Those who register for a street tree now through December 15 will also receive annuals and fencing for their tree. The block with the most trees planted for Spring 2024 will get a free visit from a food truck on planting day!
Join the urban tree movement in the Nicetown and Tioga neighborhoods with PHS Tree Tenders leading the way. PHS offers comprehensive training to empower new Tree Tenders each year, who then organize local groups dedicated to improving community health and well-being through tree planting and care.
