Nicetown and Tioga Greening Plan

Fall tree planting Mastery Charter School

Restoring the Tree Canopy

Building and maintaining a healthy tree canopy is one of the most important things a community can do for the health and well-being of residents. Investment of time and money in tree planting and stewardship pays for itself in benefits for people, the environment, and the climate many times over.

A healthy tree canopy has been shown to:

  • Improve air quality
  • Improve mental health and reduce stress
  • Reduce violent crime
  • Reduce energy usage
  • Cool our streets by as much as 20 degrees on a summer day
  • Improve academic outcomes when planted near schools

The Nicetown and Tioga neighborhoods each have approximately 10% canopy coverage. This is well below the 30% target for a healthy canopy. As a result, the streets are hotter, households use more energy, air quality is poorer, and residents are more likely to experience certain negative physical and mental health outcomes that are tied to the low tree canopy.

Get a Tree

Revitalize your neighborhood and promote a greener, healthier environment by applying for a tree through our program. PHS will provide assistance with tree permits, sidewalk pit preparations, and neighborhood tree delivery. Join forces with your neighbors to plant and nurture your new tree, fostering a sense of community and environmental stewardship.

Join the Nicetown and Tioga Tree Tender Group

Join the urban tree movement in the Nicetown and Tioga neighborhoods with PHS Tree Tenders leading the way. PHS offers comprehensive training to empower new Tree Tenders each year, who then organize local groups dedicated to improving community health and well-being through tree planting and care. Discover how you can actively participate in enhancing your neighborhood by planting trees today.
