Exhibiting at the Flower Show is a great way for everyone to join PHS in gardening for the greater good. The Design Classes are a great way for individuals, groups of friends or families, clubs, and other organizations to show off their creativity and skills. Everyone is invited to get involved!

Garden Design Classes

Design a culinary community garden with a focus on the community. Must include a seating area for at least two people. Must include at least one sustainability element or cultivation technique.  

 

Staged in an area 16′ by 12′ x 1′ deep. Exhibitors are permitted to add outdoor containers, pavers, furniture, and other accessories. All plants must be rooted. Dried flowers are permitted as accessories. Uncut fruits and vegetables are permitted. A plant list is required, and all rooted plants must be labeled.   

Limited to 4 entries

Subsidy: $2,000.

Judged on Friday, February 27, as Class 160, and Wednesday, March 4, as Class 160A. 

Design a balcony interpreting an artist’s vision of nature. Name the artist, no duplicates. 

The balcony space is 10′ wide by 6′ deep with an 8′ back wall featuring a large open space to give the impression of a sliding glass door.  Live plants in containers should predominate. Exhibitors should provide covering for the floor of the balcony.  PHS will provide standard balcony railings.  Furniture is permitted. Fresh cut flowers and accessories are permitted.  A plant list is required, and all rooted plants must be labeled. The exhibit may not exceed 8′ tall.

Subsidy: $1,000

Judged on Friday, February 27, as Class 161, and Wednesday, March 4, as Class 161A. 

Window boxes are 30″ long, 6″ wide, and 5½″ deep. The lamp post has a bracket for a hanging basket. The window box must include a minimum of 5 rooted plants and the hanging container must include at least one rooted plant. The hanging container should not exceed 18″ in diameter or 30″ in length. A plant list is required, and all plants must be rooted. 

 

CLASS 167—ILLUMINATING THE PAST. Youth Class. A window box and hanging basket inspired by history. Open to schools and youth groups working with students in grades 12 and below.

Subsidy: $150

Judged on Friday, February 27; removed on Wednesday, March 4. 

 

CLASS 168—LIGHTING THE FUTURE. Novice Class. A window box and hanging basket designed with a focus on xeriscaping or water conservation. Open to exhibitors who have not won a blue ribbon in a Design class at the PHS Philadelphia Flower Show prior to 2026.

Subsidy: $150

Judged on Wednesday, March 4.  

A wreath and container collection designed to welcome and inform visitors, inspired by an obscure or little-known historical fact or event. Name the event. No duplicates. Wreaths must consist primarily of rooted plants and dried plant material. Doorways include a door in a frame, a landing, and one step. Exhibitors will be provided with their doors in advance. Accessories are permitted. No fresh cut flowers. A plant list is required, and all rooted plants must be labeled.

Subsidy: $200.

Judged on Friday, February 27, as Class 175, and Wednesday, March 4, as Class 175A.  

CLASS 135—Create a setting of an event somewhere in the world, 1900 to Present (Modern Day). 

 

CLASS 136—Create a setting for of an event somewhere in the world, pre-historic to 1900 (Historic). 

 

Name the location and event. No duplicates. You must use at least 8 live plants. A plant list is required. Scale: one inch equals one foot. These classes will be juried on a first come, first served basis. 

 

Minimum of 4 and maximum of 6 entries in each class

Subsidy: $400

Judged on Thursday, February 26.  

Floral Design Classes

Design a store window for a type of free supply or product store. The store type or display product must be named in the intent; no duplicates are permitted. Store window to be staged on a platform 10′4″ by 6′ that is18″ above the floor. Windows are 9′6″ wide by 5′10″ high, 26″ above the floor. The interior walls are 8′ high; exterior walls are 10′ high. The exhibit must contain fresh cut flowers. Dried plant material, dried treated plant material, and accessories are permitted. A plant list is required, and all rooted plants must be labeled.

Subsidy: $1000

Judged on Friday, February 27, as Class 156, and Wednesday, March 4, as Class 156A. 

A functional design for a dining table or buffet based on a World’s Fair. Name the World’s Fair, no duplicates. To be staged on a 12′ wide by 10′ deep platform, 4″ high. No construction is permitted. Exhibitors must include a table and are permitted to include additional furniture and other accessories, including floor coverings. Fresh cut flowers must predominate. Rooted plants are permitted. Uncut fruits and vegetables are permitted. Dried plant material, dried treated plant material, and accessories are permitted. A plant list is required for all plants, and rooted plants must be labeled.

Judged on Friday, February 27, as Class 134, and Wednesday, March 4, as Class 134A.
