Learn about gardening and floral techniques and many horticulture-focused hot topics in this new and exciting speaker series at the Flower Show! Taking place in the Convention Center, towards the Grand Hall and just past the escalators, our "classroom without walls" offers daily programming that is free with your Flower Show ticket.
Each "Know to Grow” session is not just a glimpse into the horticultural community; it is a lively and engaging area of the Flower Show designed to inspire generations. Speakers will cover relevant and forward-thinking subjects that resonate with the global horticultural community and beyond.
Programs will occur daily at 12:00 pm, 2:00 pm, and 6:00 pm. On the final Sunday, March 10, programs will be at 12:00 pm, 2:00 pm, and 4:00 pm.
12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
Speaker: Sandra Lopez Cortez grew up in Guanajuato, Mexico and moved to Kennett Square, PA at the age of 14. She graduated from the Professional Gardener Program at Longwood Gardens in 2013 and obtained her bachelor's degree in Agriculture & Natural Resources with a minor in Horticulture at the University of Delaware in 2019. Sandra became a member of the Scott Arboretum staff in 2015, where she helps maintain a variety of gardens.
Presentation: All gardens require some kind of maintenance. The amount of maintenance a garden "needs" depends on many factors such as aesthetics, garden intent, time, resources, etc. In this presentation, I will talk about some of the maintenance I do at my home garden as well as some maintenance practices we perform at The Scott Arboretum.

Speaker: Kathy Jentz is the editor and publisher of the award-winning Washington Gardener magazine, based in Washington, DC. She is also the editor of three plant society journals: the Water Garden Journal (IWGS), The Azalean (ASA), and Fanfare (Daylily Society Region 3). She hosts the popular GardenDC Podcast, which was recently named Best DC Podcast. She is co-author of The Urban Garden: 101 Ways to Grow Food and Beauty in the City and her latest book is Groundcover Revolution. Her mission is to turn your thumb green! A life-long gardener, Kathy believes that growing plants should be stress-free and enjoyable. Her philosophy is inspiration over perspiration.
Presentation: Groundcovers are low-growing plants that serve many different purposes in the landscape from limiting weed growth to stabilizing slopes to adding texture to your garden. Kathy Jentz, author of the new book, Groundcover Revolution, will cover several of these beautiful, hard-working plants and the best kinds to use for our Mid-Atlantic region -- including a few great native selections.
6:00 pm - 7:00 pm
Speaker: Dan Bernarcik is a Delaware native and graduate of the University of Delaware in Plant Science. Dan held the position of Woodspath Gardener at Mt. Cuba Center and Nursery Sales Representative at Imperial Nurseries. Currently, Dan is the Horticulturist for Chanticleer Garden, tending to the Entrance Courtyards and Tennis Court Garden. At Chanticleer, Dan manages the Woodshop. Dan builds and teaches chair-building workshops around the country, as well as lectures and teaches internationally. Outside of work, Dan lives and gardens with his wife Peggy Montgomery in Wilmington, DE.
Presentation: The Exciting World of Container Culture -- a look at the breadth of container gardening styles and techniques. Different types of containers are discussed as well as some favorite plants for container culture. Tips, tricks, and techniques for you to have more exciting container displays!
