Programs will occur daily at 12:00 pm, 2:00 pm, and 6:00 pm. On the final Sunday, March 10, programs will be at 12:00 pm, 2:00 pm, and 4:00 pm.
12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
Speaker: Christopher Barrett Sheridan, "The Flower Sommelier," is an award-winning civic educator, pursuing a second career in horticulture and garden writing. Chris has a certificate in Ornamental Horticulture from Longwood Gardens and serves as a floral design and garden design instructor with Longwood and other historic gardens. Chris specializes in scented plants, cottage garden design, heirloom plants, the language of flowers, and garden history.
Presentation: The explosions of color provided by cottage gardens, PHS Pop Up Garden installations, and seasonal wildflower bouquets bring smiles to our faces, but the experience isn't complete until we get our noses into a scented bloom. Fragrance is ephemeral, invisible, and hard to describe, but it summons memories, provides comfort, and often takes us to exotic places. In this session, we will explore the language of fragrance, review a classic classification system, and journey through the scented bloom cycle. Get in the spirit and bring a new level of creativity and enjoyment to your floral endeavors and experiences!
2:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Speaker: Rena Barnett, Holly Cusumano, Elizabeth Kennel, and Joanne Montowski are four past chairs of The Herb Society of America (HSA) who will be presenting this year at the PHS Philadelphia Flower Show. The Herb Society of America (HSA) was founded in 1933 to further the knowledge, use, and delight of herbs through educational programs, research, and sharing the knowledge of its members with the community. The 'Central Unit' was formed in 1937 in Philadelphia which became the 'Philadelphia Unit' in 1940.
Presentation: The Philadelphia Unit members will be introducing herbs and their many uses -- fragrance, ornamental, medicinal, culinary, dye, and/or fiber. Each has its own story to tell throughout history. Come join us for an interactive presentation!
4:00 pm - 5:00 pm
Speaker: Barb Schmidt has been raising orchids for the last 20 years, maintains an orchid website at www.basorchidcare.com, and teaches orchid classes throughout the country. She is a regular instructor for the New York Botanical Gardens, the Smithsonian Associates, Longwood Gardens, and a local community college. In 2016, Barb published her introductory orchid care book, Orchid Care: For the Beginner. She also has had the privilege of writing articles for the American Orchid Society's (AOS's) Orchids magazine and in 2021 she created a children's sticker book for AOS, Stuck on Orchids. In 2023, the Taiwan Orchid Growers Association (TOGA) invited Barb to speak at the 2024 World Orchid Conference in Tainan, Taiwan. The topic of her presentation is, "The American Orchid Society -- Engaging, Educating, and Empowering Youth."
Presentation: This is a fun, informative presentation that delves into the origins of our love for orchids, how orchids grow in their native environments, and how to care for orchids in our homes. It provides fun facts and orchid care tips to pique the interest of experienced orchid collectors, as well as beginners. Discussions will center on several of the more common orchid genera. The class will conclude with a demonstration of how to repot an orchid.
