What’s Growing in the Garden

Design Statement - 2025 Season
by Sam Keitch

PHS Public Gardens & Landscapes team designed each section of Logan Square with an intricate spine consisting of urban tough species, focusing on airy grasses and taller perennials to create a backdrop for the summer annuals. Shrubs have been planted throughout the beds as highlights, many of which are Gold Medal Plant selections. For winter interest, Juniperus virginiana ‘Hetzii Columnaris’ and Juniperus virginiana Emerald Sentinel® have punctuated the mid section; these are then used as backdrops for red twig dogwood cultivars. Many of the brighter drifts of perennials will focus on the open areas to capture vehicular traffic sightlines, with more nuanced and subtle color combinations being repeated for pedestrians. Please continue to visit Logan and walk around the site for new plantings. Each year is unique, and the beds are never the same throughout the seasons.
