You may have heard that Philadelphia is America’s Garden Capital. However, it may come as a surprise to you the number of gardens and green spaces that PHS oversees in the Greater Philadelphia region. Here, we’ve put together a run-down of all the gorgeous PHS gardens and landscapes to explore with family and friends throughout the year!

PHS works on its own and in partnership with different organizations, community groups, and development agencies to manage its portfolio of gardens, green spaces, and other horticulture-focused spots. With PHS’s centuries of horticulture knowledge, you can be sure that all of these spaces are beautiful, support the goals of the space and its visitors, and are as eco-friendly as possible!

Azalea Garden

Originally created by PHS in 1952 to commemorate the organization's 125th anniversary, the Azalea Garden is a four-acre public garden nestled between the Philadelphia Museum of Art and Boathouse Row. Open year-round, the garden showcases numerous varieties of azaleas and rhododendrons that burst into color each spring, complemented by seasonal displays of bulbs, perennials, and flowering shrubs. Meandering paths, mature shade trees, and sweeping planting beds create a peaceful retreat that has become one of Philadelphia's most beloved landscapes.

JFK Boulevard Greenway

Located on this main thoroughfare between 20th and 22nd Streets, this greenway features seasonal interest for those coming or going from Philadelphia’s iconic 30th Street train station.

Logan Square Gardens

Located at the heart of Philadelphia's Benjamin Franklin Parkway, Logan Square is one of the city's most recognizable public landscapes. Throughout the year, PHS designs, installs, and maintains the seasonal gardens surrounding the historic Swann Memorial Fountain. In spring, nearly 100,000 tulips, daffodils, alliums, and other flowering bulbs transform the square into one of Philadelphia's most celebrated floral displays. Summer tropicals, colorful annuals, and perennial plantings ensure the gardens offer something new in every season. With the recently restored Swann Memorial Fountain once again fully operating, there has never been a better time to experience this iconic Philadelphia destination.

PHS Meadowbrook Farm

Located in Meadowbrook, Montgomery County, PHS Meadowbrook Farm is a 21-acre public garden that offers gardening inspiration in every season. Open free to the public from April through October, the property features a collection of outdoor “garden rooms,” watch with its own distinct charm. A pollinator garden, xeric garden, rain garden, rock garden, cactus and succulent garden, are just some of the many delightful gardens. Meadowbrook Farm showcases sustainable gardening practices, exceptional plant combinations, and ideas visitors can bring home to their own landscapes. Whether you're seeking inspiration or a peaceful place to explore, Meadowbrook Farm is one of the Philadelphia region's premier garden destinations.

PHS Pop Up Garden at Manayunk

Set on a once-vacant parking lot near a coal depot location, this garden oasis is located in Manayunk, a bustling shopping, dining, and entertainment area in Northwest Philadelphia. Perfect for family, friends, and furry pals, this location features woodland-inspired plantings, plus raised produce beds that help support a local food bank.

PHS Pop Up Garden at South Street

Located in the heart of Philadelphia's South Street, the PHS Pop Up Garden is a seasonal outdoor destination where horticulture, food, and community come together. Lush plantings of annuals, perennials, ornamental grasses, herbs, and seasonal blooms create a welcoming setting to enjoy lunch, dinner, drinks, and live events. Throughout the season, visitors can also take part in free plant swaps, gardening activities, and special programs, making the Pop Up Garden a favorite gathering place for plant lovers, neighbors, and visitors alike.

26th Street Greenway

As part of the Gateways of Philadelphia initiative, the 26th Street Gateway transforms one of the city's busiest transportation corridors into a welcoming gateway for residents and visitors. Designed to be experienced from the road, the landscape features PHS's "Ribbon of Gold" planting palette, inspired by the colors in Philadelphia’s city flag, where sweeping bands of gold, accented by purple and blue, create a memorable seasonal display while showcasing the beauty and ecological value of public landscapes.

PHS Working With Garden Partners

PHS also partners with various organizations to beautify public spaces and collaborate to advance the health and well-being of residents, employees, and visitors. Below is a wide variety of these joint public spaces, ranging in size, horticultural interest, and land use.

Eastern State Penitentiary Terrace Garden

Bordering one of Philadelphia's most iconic landmarks and tourist destinations, the gardens at Eastern State Penitentiary showcase how beautiful, resilient landscapes can thrive in demanding urban conditions. PHS designs and maintains these naturalistic perennial plantings along the site's sun-soaked stone walls, using the space to trial plants and sustainable planting techniques that inform gardens and public landscapes throughout the city.

Gateways to Philadelphia (I-76 Corridor Beautification Project)

Welcoming millions of travelers each year, the Gateways to Philadelphia initiative transforms key highway entrances to Center City with thoughtfully designed landscapes that celebrate Philadelphia with a “ribbon of gold” plant palette to match the colors of the Philadelphia flag. In partnership with the City of Philadelphia, PHS designs, installs, and maintains colorful, resilient plantings that enhance major transportation corridors while creating a greener, more inviting arrival experience. The gardens showcase sustainable horticulture and demonstrate how strategic landscape design can strengthen civic pride and connect visitors to Philadelphia's rich gardening heritage.

Independence National Historical Park's Bicentennial Bell Garden

Located within Independence National Historical Park, the Bicentennial Bell Garden is home to the Bicentennial Bell, a gift from Queen Elizabeth II marking the United States Bicentennial and symbolizing shared history between the U.S. and Great Britain. Cast at the Whitechapel Bell Foundry, the bell anchors this historic civic space. PHS provides ongoing garden maintenance for its perennials, shrubs, and flowering trees to frame the bell and soften the historic setting within one of Philadelphia’s most visited parks.

LOVE Park

Located in the heart of Center City Philadelphia, LOVE Park is one of the city’s most visited and photographed public spaces, known for its iconic LOVE sculpture and its role as a central gathering place for residents, workers, and tourists.

PHS provides seasonal garden design and project management to keep LOVE Park beautiful and photo-ready all year round. The landscape is refreshed throughout the seasons with high-impact, color-driven plantings designed for maximum visual appeal in an urban setting.

Each display is built around bold seasonal color palettes, often featuring rich reds, pinks, purples, and orange accent tones balanced with deep foliage for contrast and depth. The result is a continuously evolving public garden that enhances downtown Philadelphia’s streetscape and reinforces LOVE Park as a must-visit destination for Philadelphia tourism, photography, and outdoor events.

Mann Center for the Performing Arts

Located in West Fairmount Park, the Mann Center for the Performing Arts is one of Philadelphia’s signature outdoor performance venues, where music, nature, and open-air gathering come together in one place. PHS supports the site with seasonal plantings in smaller “pocket” areas across the campus, including entrances, backstage spaces, terrace containers, and the newly opened South Plaza entrance. Instead of large garden beds, the focus is on thoughtful, high-impact moments that welcome visitors and bring color and life to the spaces people move through most.

The Philadelphia Navy Yard

The Philadelphia Navy Yard is a 1,200-acre waterfront district where industry and green space come together. It is also a Level 1 arboretum, meaning the entire site is managed as a living collection of trees and landscapes and is an outdoor space for learning, biodiversity, and seasonal change. PHS supports planting and maintenance across its public areas including offices, hotels, and a growing network of parks. The landscape feels like a living system, with seasonal color and structure woven throughout everyday use. A standout feature is nearly 90 rain gardens that help manage stormwater while doubling as small green pockets. Sports Complex Special Services District

PECO Green Roof

Working with Philadelphia’s local energy provider PECO, PHS helps maintain a 50,000+ square foot green roof that brings nature into an otherwise industrial rooftop landscape. The planting design focuses on drought-tolerant, water-conscious species that reduce stormwater runoff, improve building efficiency, and create a thriving habitat above the city. From the roof, sweeping views of the Philadelphia skyline make it one of the city’s most unexpected green spaces which can also be experienced through scheduled, private tours.

Rodin Museum and Philadelphia Museum of Art

Working with these world-renowned museums, PHS provides seasonal garden interest outdoors, including tulips, daffodils, and other seasonal interest plantings.

Sports Complex Services District

PHS helps bring seasonal color and care to the neighborhoods surrounding Philadelphia’s sports and entertainment complex, an area that welcomes hundreds of thousands of residents, commuters, and visitors each year. Work focuses on everyday public spaces that shape the experience of the district, from neighborhood cul-de-sacs and pedestrian crossings to key green areas like Geary Park and the Penrose Circle commuter corridor. These smaller-scale interventions add moments of beauty and care to high-traffic, often overlooked spaces, supporting a better quality of life in the surrounding community.

Subaru of America Headquarters

At the Subaru of America headquarters in Camden, NJ, PHS maintains a sustainable meadow-style landscape that offers thousands of employees a place to step outside, recharge, and connect with nature during the workday. Now more than a decade old, the planting has matured into a resilient, naturalistic system built from thousands of plugs and established without chemical inputs or irrigation. It stands as a long-term example of ecological landscape design in an active corporate setting.

The Delaware River Waterfront

Along the Delaware River waterfront in Philadelphia, PHS works to maintain seasonal plantings that bring color and life to one of the city’s most active destinations. From Race Street Pier to Cherry Street Pier and Spruce Street Harbor Park, these spaces shift throughout the year with rotating seasonal displays that support both summer and winter programming like Winterfest. The PHS landscape extends across a 5-mile stretch of bike and pedestrian trails, making it one of the city’s top recreational corridors.
