The Gateway Garden at Drexel University brought to life by PHS is a beautiful oasis in the bustling center of Philadelphia – a gateway to University City, located at 32nd and Market Streets, which was once a broad expanse of highway and sideways. Built on the former site of a Firestone automotive repair site, the Garden is a multi-use, serene outdoor gathering spot blooming year-round with a variety of plants, trees, and other horticultural delights. It’s the perfect spot for Drexel students, faculty, administration, alumni, and other visitors – whether to meet for lunch, dinner, study groups, performances, a seasonal market, or anytime in between.
The Gateway Garden was created based on multiple conversations with Drexel students, faculty, and administration to provide a destination that the Drexel community and visitors could experience and safely enjoy. The multifunctional, flexible outdoor space provides a new option on campus for meetups and other events taking place throughout the year.
The Gateway Garden features an amazing variety of horticultural elements with plant material (scroll down to see the plant photo gallery) that was chosen to represent the worldly diversity of the Drexel student body.
During the academic year, students can attend activities, events, and other special programs and enjoy green, open space in a colorful floral setting. Food trucks will frequent the space, and there will be plenty of sunny and shady spaces during the summer to get a quick tan or a short nap.
Also throughout the summer months, programming by the Pennsylvania Horticulture Society will be offered on a number of topics, with events like plant swaps and other gardening-centric activities planned. For the 21+ crowd, there will be fun and educational beer-centric programming.
Space reservations at the Gateway Garden are available for private events, programming activities, performances, and other special events (subject to space use approval and availability). See the column on the right to place your reservation today!
