Surrounding your trees with mulch is a must. Mulch will keep the soil temperature cool and assist with water retention—aiding tree growth while conserving water (and the time you spend watering). Mulch also provides trees with important nutrients while discouraging the growth of weeds and invading grass.
Bob Adams, TreeVitalize Watersheds Regional Manager, PHS, explains the proper mulching technique with a ‘rule of 3’s’—surround your tree with 3 feet of mulch in diameter across the trunk, extending 3 inches back from the trunk on either side. Add enough to form a pile 3 inches high and your tree will thank you—especially as the weather continues to warm into the summer.
