Raised Garden Beds

Raised garden beds are the perfect solution for urban gardeners with low-quality local soil or concrete backyards. In this video, our gardening pro Sally McCabe, PHS Associate Director, Community Education, shows us how a raised bed can be built with relative ease, at a low cost, with just a touch of carpentry know-how!  All you’ll need are wood planks, screws, and brackets for extra support.

Raised beds can be constructed in various sizes according to the amount of wood you have available. A width of four feet is considered ideal. Be sure to find an evenly flat location to place the bed that offers appropriate sun for your plants. Before adding plants to the bed, follow Sally’s pro tip and line the bottom with cardboard and a layer of plant waste to reduce the amount of soil needed to fill your bed.
