phs gardens
When you think of a beer garden, do you expect to be surrounded by plants like palm trees, large agaves, cacti and a 40’ olive tree? When you visit the PHS Pop Up Garden in Manayunk, the answer is a resounding “Yes!”
The newest Pop Up Garden location – grown, planted, and cared for by PHS --- features more than 2,200 varieties of perennials, succulents, grasses, trees, and shrubs, as well as a large food gardening area with vegetables and herbs that will be harvested and donated to a Manayunk-based food bank. From the moment our visitors walk into the garden, there are beautiful plants everywhere the eye can see – on the tables, in raised beds, in containers, hanging from a wooden roof area – even floral masks that our servers wear!

Beyond the easy-breezy vibe of the Garden, the plant palette is soothing for visitors – with colors including many shades of green, plus yellow, red, purple, silver, and white, plus a collection of variegated plants to spark interest. PHS gardeners spend time watering, pruning, and caring for the plants to bring the best of horticulture to the community in a comfortable outdoor setting.
One particularly interesting component of this Pop Up Garden are the plants that were salvaged from the 2020 Philadelphia Flower Show, including a decades-old olive tree and other flora that were well-suited for an outdoor garden setting. PHS has made a commitment to maintain sustainable gardening practices, and the Pop Up Garden was an ideal location to showcase the wonderful specimens from the Flower Show for a local audience in their own neighborhood.
We welcome you to experience the Garden as we transition from Summer to Fall. No reservations needed during our operating hours – simply mask up, and enjoy this Manayunk outdoor oasis!
