PHS Partner Location
Experience the newly reimagined Athenaeum garden, created with PHS, and explore how landscapes can connect history, memory, and civic life.
Begin from 5-6 p.m. with a special opportunity to visit the garden, designed by award winning, landscape designer Wambui Ippolito. Featuring fragrant perennials, flowering vines, and seasonal color, the garden extends The Athenaeum's mission of learning and discovery into the landscape. The garden is located at St. James Place and S. Randolph Street, behind The Athenaeum building at 219 S. 6th Street, Philadelphia
At 6 p.m., Wambui will share the story behind the design and reflect on how gardens have long expressed Philadelphia's traditions of science, immigration, civic pride, and our relationship with the natural world.
Wambui Ippolito is an award-winning landscape designer and horticulturist whose work is inspired by her childhood in Kenya's Great Rift Valley. In 2021, she won “Best in Show” at the PHS Philadelphia Flower Show and was named by Veranda magazine as one of "11 Revolutionary Female Landscape Designers and Architects Everyone Should Know." A graduate of the New York Botanical Garden's School of Professional Horticulture, she designs gardens that connect people with nature and promote wellbeing.
