know to grow
Join oak enthusiast Tim Boland as he presents a snapshot of global oak diversity, worldwide cultural connections with oaks, and the pressing need for oak research and conservation. Tim will also share the mission of the International Oak Society and current programs involving the sustainable uses of oak, propagation, and the protection of endangered species and oak habitats. Additionally, he will review the naturally occurring oaks of the mid-Atlantic region and provide recommendations of smaller oaks for gardeners with limited space.
The enumeration of oak diversity worldwide currently stands at 430 species. Throughout the world, oaks hold great importance as a human food source and several by-products. No tree has done more for humanity than the oaks, yet they remain undervalued and understudied. The last decade has witnessed a greater societal awareness of the role oaks play in supporting biodiversity in every habit they exist. The concept of the Tree of Life accurately depicts the genus Quercus and its co-dependent fauna. Despite our best efforts to value oak trees, they face various threats, including exploitation, poor land management, habitat fragmentation, rising pest and disease pressures, and the uncertainties posed by a rapidly warming planet. Tim will share key advancements in our understanding of oaks, and share stories of groups devoted to growing and preserving oaks for future generations
PHS is delighted to present the Know to Grow Webinar Series, a vibrant and inclusive program designed to nurture your love for gardening. This reimagined lecture series welcomes everyone, from seasoned gardeners to those with a budding curiosity about the plant world.
Tim Boland is the former Executive Director of the Polly Hill Arboretum, located on the island of Martha's Vineyard in West Tisbury, Massachusetts. He holds an undergraduate
degree in Horticulture and a master's in Botany, Plant Ecology, and Systematics from
Michigan State University.
Tim specializes in oaks from all over the world. He is involved in various plant conservation projects to preserve threatened oaks in North America, Europe, and Asia. He is a member of the Board of the International Oak Society (IOS) and chair of the Oak Conservation and Research Committee. He helped develop a special fund that has thus far supported 28 research projects worldwide where oak species are vulnerable to
extinction.
Throughout Tim’s career, he has bridged the gap between botany and horticulture and loves teaching aspiring students about the beauty, mystery, and utility of plants. Tim retired this year after twenty-four years leading the development of new infrastructure and programs at the Polly Hill Arboretum. Tim has his own firm, Conservation Design, and teaches a variety of topics based on his long career as a horticulturist and botanist.
PHS's Vice President of Horticulture, Andrew Bunting, will moderate the discussion.
