Special Event
PHS Meadowbrook Farm
This class will demonstrate the construction of a hypertufa container- a rock-like garden container made of cement, perlite, and peat moss. Proper soil mixture, planting, and the maintenance of trough gardens in hypertufa containers will be discussed. All materials, including plants for your miniature landscape will be provided.
You will find (or may have found) that planting a trough garden will only make you want to plant more trough gardens! There are so many different plants that will grow in small containers. Watching them grow and spread into miniature landscapes is immensely satisfying. Trough Gardens are perfect when there is a lack of gardening space, or a gardener has decreased mobility.
This class will be taught by Joe Marano, the co-manager and head grower at Marano Gardens, located in Fort Washington. He is a graduate of Delaware Valley University with a bachelors in Ornamental Horticulture. He taught Woody & Herbaceous college courses at Del Val. He is a member and a long-time volunteer with the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS) and the Philadelphia Flower Show. He is the former President of the Conifer Society, Eastern Region, and a lifetime member of the National Association of the Rock Garden Society (NARGS).
