As an 1827 Society Member, join your host, Charles Cresson, at Hedgleigh Spring for an exclusive private tour of the incredible two-acre grounds, and enjoy a delicious lunch surrounded by beautiful horticulture. Hedgleigh Spring has been a family property since 1883, and features diverse habitats and microclimates with an extensive plant collection.
Hedgleigh Spring is the home of author and lecturer Charles Cresson. The garden was designed by his grandfather in the 1920’s and 1930’s and retains its early 20th Century character. Since 1970, Charles has filled the diverse habitats and microclimates with a diverse and extensive plant collection. Notable features include towering oaks and black gum under-planted with mature azaleas, dogwoods, and large hardy camellia hybrids. Subtle topography, numerous stone retaining walls, and mature woody plants divide the property into many other sections containing diverse habitats, intensively "naturalized" with a wide range of unusual plants.
Hedgleigh Spring has been featured in numerous magazine articles, several books including The American Man's Garden by Rosemary Verey (1990), and most recently, Private Gardens of Philadelphia by Rob Cardillo and Nicole Juday Rhoads (2024).
