public gardens and landscapes
April 8, 2024 – Philadelphia, PA - The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society will welcome guests back to PHS Meadowbrook Farm beginning April 13 at 2pm. Admission is FREE to the public and does not require advance registration. Meadowbrook Farm will be open through October 12, 2024.
PHS’s Meadowbrook Farm will be showcasing plenty of flower power to usher in the spring season! The 25-acre property will reflect a cottage garden theme in 2024, with popular garden favorites like pansies, foxgloves, hollyhocks, sweet peas, and edible plants like ornamental kale beginning to bloom over the next 4-5 weeks. Springtime guests can also expect to see plenty of cool-season perennials like euphorbias, as well as tender-perennials like Melianthus, celebrated for its attractive foliage shape. Plus, stop by the gardens now to see unique, double-flowering, apricot-colored tulips!
The gardens surrounding Meadowbrook Farm’s Visitor Center will be adorned with sun-loving plants, thanks to this location’s gorgeous lighting at sunrise and sunset. Gardens surrounding the property’s main estate will celebrate spring with fragrant flowers including Matthiola with a clove-like scent, offering a serene sensory experience for guests. The stone wall located behind the main estate house will feature Mediterranean-inspired plantings this season, such as Phlomis and a variety of tropical plants.
Within the farm grounds layout, there are more than a dozen quaint “garden rooms,” which have been refreshed for guests. The “Queen’s Garden” will celebrate spring with a burst of color from springtime bulbs, annuals, and sweet peas, coming into bloom by early May. The beloved “Herb Garden” will feature sorrel with striking red and green foliage, fennel, and bay. Other garden rooms feature signature flowers, plants, trees, or unique statuary for guests to enjoy.
Meadowbrook Farm is a 25-acre garden property that was entrusted to PHS by the late J. Liddon Pennock, Jr. in 2004, and has educated and entertained visitors with its unique gardens since that date. Located in Meadowbrook, PA, Abington Township (just 13 miles from Philadelphia), discovery is around every corner at Meadowbrook Farm, connecting all visitors to horticulture and history. Maintained by PHS’s expert horticulturists, Meadowbrook Farm offers free admission for guests, with an ever-changing garden experience that features a new variety of beautiful plants and displays each growing season.
“We are thrilled to welcome guests back to Meadowbrook Farm this spring. Our gardens have been enhanced for the spring, making Meadowbrook the perfect location to take in beautiful spring color and fragrance, and with planting changeouts happening regularly throughout the season, there is something new to experience with every visit.” said Matthew Dougherty, Director of Facilities and Meadowbrook Farm.
