Love Where You Live Greening Plan for Nicetown and Tioga

PHS, Nicetown CDC, and Tioga United worked with community members and organizations to create the Love Where You Live greening plan for the Nicetown and Tioga neighborhoods of Philadelphia.

With feedback from over 400 residents, the Love Where You Live plan addresses these neighborhood priorities:

  • Reduce trash and litter
  • Increase access to fresh healthy food
  • Reduce crime
  • Increase job opportunities

Over the next 3 years and beyond, we will:

  • Clean and green all eligible vacant lots
  • Train and place neighborhoods residents in green jobs
  • Restore neighborhood tree canopy
  • Mobilize neighbors and businesses to increase access to fresh food
  • Support residents to garden and beautify their blocks

45 residents volunteered during a planting and greening day. In total, PHS engaged over 400 residents in creating the Love Where You Live greening plan for Nicetown and Tioga.
70 vacant parcels were added to PHS’s portfolio of lots cleaned and greened by Nicetown CDC and Tioga United.
Nicetown CDC and Tioga United are community partners in the Same Day Work and Pay program, with over 1,100 daily job opportunities created.
Over 750 native perennials, shrubs, and small trees were planted on Rowan Walkway, Tioga United, and Tioga Hope Garden and Park. Community members were trained and hired to mulch, water, and weed some of the gardens.
As part of early action projects within the community plan, Furtick Farms Community Garden was created through the planning process, with expanded support for the Tioga Hope Garden and Park. Together both sites serve as learning hubs for community and home gardeners.
