Growing Organic Workshop Series

PHS' Community Gardens Program presents the Growing Organic Workshop series. All workshop fees are a suggested donation of $10 per person, unless otherwise noted.

Summer Pruning and Trellising

  • Saturday July 14th, 11 am – 1 pm
  • Tame those tomatoes and corral those cucumbers. Trellises of all varieties are useful in different ways in organizing your garden and keeping your produce off the ground. Conquer your fear of tomato pruning. Improve the quality of your harvest. Participants will gain hands on experience with various pruning and trellising techniques.

Cover Cropping, Intercropping and Season Extension

  • Wednesday August 22nd, 6 – 7 pm
  • Adam Hill from PHS City Harvest and Dylan DeVlieger from PHS’ Farm for the City will teach participants how to use cover crops to improve soil fertility as well as how to extend garden harvests through the fall. Participants will learn how to select, establish and manage cover crops successfully. Cover crop seeds will be available to take home.

Grow Your Own Winecap Mushrooms from Woodchips

  • Thursday September 6th, 6 – 8 pm
  • Brian Versek of the Mycopolitan Mushroom Company and Adrian Galbraith-Paul of Heritage Farm and will teach growers how to grow the delicious Winecap mushrooms on wood chips. Winecaps, or Garden Giants, help accelerate the decomposition of wood chips into a beneficial mulch for your garden. Participants will leave with a bag of spawn to help start their own cultivation.

Insect Mini Beast Mansions

  • Thursday September 20th, 6 – 8 pm
  • Melissa Palmer of Florum Flowers will discuss attracting pollinators and beneficial insects to your garden and will lead a hands-on activity to create habitat for pollinators. Participants will go home with their own “mini-beast mansion”.

Bee Keeping 101

  • Saturday October 13th, 11 am – 1 pm
  • Adding an Apiary In 2019? Discover cost, knowledge base, equipment, and time requirements. All you need to succeed with your apiary. Don Shump owner of Philadelphia Bee Co. uses a variety of methods to convey how bees work and what beekeepers do to promote a new-found understanding and respect for bees and their importance in our everyday lives.

Building a Compost Bin from Recycled Pallets

  • Date and time TBD
  • Fee: $12 includes compost bin. Customize a compost bin to exactly fit your garden’s needs without spending any money. Then learn how to use it properly to build rich soil and not attract unwelcome visitors. Take home the finished product.
