Lancaster County is very interesting for so many reasons-agricultural, horticultural, historical and more. We will explore the summer gardens of Conestoga House, the estate of the late James Hale and Louise McClure Steinman of Lancaster. The summer gardens emphasize tropical and container plantings, featuring more than 3,000 annuals, 400 tropical plants, 160 varieties of perennials, and over 160 rose bushes.
After our guided tour and lunch at Conestoga House, we'll travel a short distance to Wright's Ferry Mansion in Columbia, Pennsylvania, along the Susquehanna River. Although not a mansion in today's terms, it definitely was when it opened in 1738 in an area considered Pennsylvania's frontier. The historical house and ferry played an important part in the transportation of the era, providing a good place to cross the Susquehanna River.
