A second trip to this garden-rich area of Maryland has been added! These are three completely different gardens than the visit on May 23. The first garden has been featured in many books and magazines as the epitome of the style defined as the New American Garden. Many things have changed in the garden in the ensuing years, but the owners have maintained the style of their New American Garden through judicious pruning and careful maintenance.
The next garden, originally pastureland, has been transformed with a prairie-style home surrounded by gardens that represent the artistic interests of one owner and the horticultural interests of the other. The owners conceived the terraced house and gardens to complement the home and fit into rather than onto the landscape.
After lunch in the second garden, we will travel a short distance to a large estate on almost 50 acres. The main features include a formal parterre, large mixed perennial borders, a woodland, collections of roses, Japanese maples, rhododendrons, and a pinetum. The layout of the garden is representative of the English style with strolling paths that enhance the visitor’s experience. Our chartered bus will pick up passengers at the Horticultural Center in Fairmount Park at 7:20 am and at PHS, corner of 20th and Arch Streets, at 7:45 am. Please indicate where you will board the bus when registering and if you have any dietary restrictions.
Please note: Early bird registration is available to PHS Members only, February 27 – March 14, 2019.
