Taking a strategic approach to neighborhood redevelopment, PHS works with community-based organizations, city agencies, and local small businesses to transform Philadelphia’s vacant lots into neighborhood assets.
The LandCare program cleans and greens vacant lots using an interim landscape treatment: removing all debris, trash, and weedy vegetation, adding new topsoil, grading and seeding, planting trees, and installing our signature post-and-rail fence, which permits recreational use of these outdoor spaces while preventing dumping. Studies have found that greening is linked with significant reductions in certain crimes, improvements in physical and mental health, and increases in property value. To date, over 12,000 vacant lots have been stabilized and transformed into usable community space in neighborhoods around Philadelphia, but with 40,000 vacant lots in the city, there is so much more to do!
Help us clean and green more sites through our Adopt-A-Lot program.
