Temporary Lead Gardener

The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS) is seeking a temporary Lead Gardener Position for landscape maintenance operations at a PHS managed site in Philadelphia. This site is comprised of a large number of mature trees & shrubs, mixed perennial beds, annual displays, rain gardens, and meadow plantings which are maintained by a small team of seasonal gardeners under the direction of the PHS Project Manager and this Lead Gardener position.  The Lead Gardener will have competent knowledge and experience with plant identification, fine gardening detail work, proper pruning techniques, quality horticultural procedures and the ability to identify common pests and diseases.  Our Lead Gardener will work closely with the PHS Project Manager to manage the team of zone gardeneres on site.  He/She will also keep track of site status and note any potential work needed.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Effectively manage team of 2-3 full time gardeners while also maintaining the entry gardens on site
  • Perform seasonal garden tasks such as pruning, planting, weeding, mulching, dividing & transpalnting, landscape debris removal, as well as other required tasks within assigned areas
  • Installation of new perennial gardens as well as renovations of existing landscapes
  • Proactively address issues in the garden
  • Scout for pests and disease
  • Light pest control utilizing IPM practices and use of organic products whenever possible
  • Communicate with PHS Project Manager with feedback, questions, needs, and requests from Property Manager
  • Maintenance and care of tools, equipment, and company vehicles
  • Implement excellent safety practices
  • Complete weekly paperwork as outlined

 

Education, Experience and Skills Required:

  • Minimum 2-3 years of proven garden experience; degree or certificate in horticulture or related field preferred
  • Working knowledge of best horticultural practices and techniques
  • Proficiency in proper pruning techniques for a variety of ornamental shrubs and trees
  • Self-motivated and attentive to details
  • Knowledgeable in are areas of weed identification
  • Ability to safely operate commercial grade power equipment including string trimmers, hedge trimmers, pole pruners
  • Valid driver’s license and the ability to operate a small vehicle with trailer
  • Must be committed to the mission of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society

 

Physical Demands:

Must be able to lift 45 pounds, work in bending and standing positions for extended periods, work in adverse weather conditions.
