School Gardens Coordinator

Position Summary:

PHS works to connect people with horticulture and together create beautiful, healthy and sustainable communities. We help steward a robust and growing network of community and school gardens with support, education, materials, resources and technical assistance. The School Gardens Coordinator will work alongside the PHS Gardens team to deliver and assess a comprehensive interorganizational school garden program, while supporting and connecting youth to local, nutritious foods in their community.

The School Gardens Coordinator will be responsible for collaborating with and building capacity amongst teachers to develop and implement school garden programming. The School Gardens Coordinator will also be responsible for follow up with Green City Teacher participants such as annual assessments and focus groups, and documenting outcomes and impacts associated with school garden programming.


Essential Functions:

  • Act as liaison between partners and schools, providing the technical support needed for teachers and students to maintain a vibrant educational and vegetable production space at key schools
  • Support teachers in designing and implementing an inclusive school garden/STEM curriculum
  • Assist with delivering training workshops in school and through Green City Teachers related to horticulture and school garden curriculum
  • Carry out evaluations, surveys and participant focus groups
  • Manage youth data tracking systems
  • Document outcomes and impacts associated with school garden programming
  • Compile and build on existing school garden resources
  • Assist with material distribution
  • Perform other work-related duties as assigned.

  • Participate in PHS events throughout the year including PHeaSt and the Philadelphia Flower Show
  • Help to enlist new and retain existing donors by sharing the benefits of PHS membership with partners, advisors, program participants and others with whom carrying out our mission
  • Remain current with organization information and changes
  • Promote the work of PHS Programs locally, regionally, and nationally
  • Communicate and implement the organization’s strategies, policies, and procedures to staff
  • Comply with the organization’s policies and procedures
  • Promote and applies teamwork skills
  • Notify appropriate individuals promptly of problems or unusual matters of significance
  • Execute emergency procedures in accordance with organizational standards
  • Comply with safety regulations and procedures
  • Attend appropriate meetings and training sessions
  • Use sustainable practices whenever possible.


Supervisory Responsibility


Education, Experience and Skills Required:

  • Minimum one year (through 2 seasons) of hands-on agricultural experience
  • Minimum one year educational/teaching experience
  • Experience using and assessing STEM curriculum in school gardens
  • Experience in facilitation, community organizing and training skills with diverse groups across race, culture, language, class and urban/rural divides
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills across constituencies, including and not limited to team members, program participants, and school faculty
  • Familiarity with the Philadelphia region a plus
  • Outstanding organization skills, attention to detail and ability to handle multiple priorities in a timely and reliable manner
  • Valid driver’s license and a clean, safe driving record
  • Flexibility and good sense of humor
  • Must be committed to the mission of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society.


Physical Demands:

Ability to lift and move 50 lbs comfortably
