Through the PHS City Harvest project, volunteer community gardeners donate food to area food cupboards. But the program also empowers a network of entrepreneurial local growers who raise fruits and vegetables for profit. PHS supports these small-scale growers with materials and training and through neighborhood-based “green resource centers,” where growers can pick up supplies and receive hands-on training in organic and sustainable gardening methods. The Growers Alliance participants sell the fresh produce in their communities, at farmers markets, and to local restaurants---in addition to donating a portion of their bounty.
